800 Acorns Anniversary
We celebrated the first anniversary of the 800 Acorns planting by Kentucky Writers and Artists for Reforestation. There was paintings by John Lackey, photography by Morris Grubbs, a short film by Sean Anderson, and a short program of music and poetry. A beautiful broadside of a Mary Ann Taylor-Hall poem was given to attendees as keepsakes.
A&S Faculty Members Participate in SEC Travel Program

The SEC (Southeastern Conference) Faculty Travel Program will support more than 100 SEC faculty members during the 2018-2019 academic year, the league office announced Monday. Nine University of Kentucky faculty members will participate. Established in 2012 by the SEC provosts, the program is designed to provide financial assistance from the SEC office that bolsters intra-SEC collaboration.

Now Accepting Nominations of Books for our 2019 Book Prize
The editors of Early American Literature are pleased to announce the fifth annual Early American Literature Book Prize, which will be given for an author’s second or subsequent academic monograph about American literature in the colonial period through the early republic (roughly 1830). The prize is offered in collaboration with the University of North Carolina Press, the Society of Early Americanists, and the MLA’s Forum on American Literature to 1800.
Frankenstein's 200 Year Anniversary
The English Department hosted Frankenstein Forever in honor of the 200th anniversary of Mary Shell'ys Frankenstein, the event included a viewing of Young Frankenstein and a costume contest.
3-Minute Thesis Competition
All four of our English PhD and MFA students who competed in the 3MT prelims have made it to the finals! Let's all congratulate Anna Bedsore, Leslie Malland, Valerie Stevens, and Leigh Glanzman who will be presenting their 3-minute theses as they compete in the finals on Tuesday, October 30, at 4:30 at the Worsham Cinema in the Gatton Student Center. Each audience member at the 3MT will get to vote for the People's Choice Award, so I hope there will be a strong turnout from our department. Please come out and support our finalists!
