MFA Funding

We are pleased to offer eight fully funded Teaching Assistantships annually in the English Department or the Department of Writing, Rhetoric, and Digital Studies (WRD) for a competitive stipend plus full tuition remission and student health insurance. In special circumstances, funding may be available for a third year, with approval by the Director of Graduate Studies in English and the Director of the MFA Program in Creative Writing. Students with Teaching Assistantships garner extensive teaching experience and training by assisting faculty as well as teaching their own courses. TAships last two years, provided the student stays in good standing with the department, the college, and the University.

Please fill out this form and upload with your application if you are interested in being considered for funding.

Additional funding is available for admitted MFA students. Several departmental fellowships are awarded each year. Additionally, MFA students are eligible to apply for University-wide fellowships offered through the Graduate School. The majority of the fellowships carry a tuition scholarship as well as a stipend. Duration of these University fellowships may be from one to two years, depending on fellowship type.

Once on campus, MFAs are eligible to apply for competitive summer reading stipends, travels grants to AWP, and the two-week UK MFA Creative Writing Residency at the Mill House in Scottsville, VA.
